Polarization Aspects in Hi-Speed Optical Communications
Abstract
The world's current and future telecommunication structures rely on the optical networks deployed world-wide. The next generation of optical communication system is expected to fulfill the increased internet usage by pushing the performance to achieve a high capacity and highly efficient transmission. This telepresentation will focus on two important aspects of polarization in such photonic communication systems, namely (1) to increase the transmission capacity using polarization division multiplexing (PolDM) where two modulated signals are launched in two orthogonal polarizations and (2) to reduce the impact of signal impairments in a high bit rate transmission by the use of fast and automatic endless polarization controllers.
Who is the telelecturer?
Ariya Hidayat finished his Bachelor and Master from the Institute of Technology Bandung in 1999 and 2002. After that, he spent a few years as a scientific researcher at the University of Paderborn, Germany and completed his Ph.D. in the field of Optical Communication in 2008. At that time, he realized the first FPGA-based controller for a record-breaking ultra-fast electro-optical polarization stabilization and published over two dozen papers in photonic systems journals and conferences. Currently he is working for Nokia in Oslo, Norway.
