Many people assume that Mathematics is a hard subject to learn which is unused in work. They seem to think that by studying mathematics they will be ended being a teacher in a school or a lecturer. In fact, these assumptions are wrong. On the contrary, mathematics is being used in a lot of fields, like in the bank, insurance (as an actuary), investment, pension funds, risk management, stock exchange Jakarta, IT, engineering, Operation Research, etc.
That’s why I chose Mathematics as my major in UPH. I got a lot of experience during my study at Actuarial Mathematics, especially in actuarial field, not only about the knowledge itself and knowing nothing how to use that knowledge, but after I begin working in insurance company as an actuary, those knowledge I’ve learned turned to be very useful.

As a proud alumnus of the applied Mathematics – Actuarial, I can't speak more highly of Science and Mathematics Faculty of Pelita Harapan University. The academics are rigorous, the student life is incredibly fun, and the whole staff was very supportive and helpful with everything. My mathematics lectures seemed to really care about my learning development and offered me fantastic suggestions that helped me prepare for my future. Some people might think that math is not a good choice for your study. I must say that math has received more acknowledgement from another field of study and industry. I'm doing a PhD degree in multi-disciplinary science. I can apply my mathematical skills in my chosen field of research with confidence. I started my study at UPH in 2008, not in Mathematics but in Informatics. I joined the Math department in 2009 as a student in their double degree math-informatics program. I've made a great decision to study in Math department. I've learnt many things, including academic and non-academic skills. The lecturers are friendly and very supportive. The most important thing is, they are responsible for you as their student. As you finish your degree, they will give you more than enough for you to survive in the real world.

The Department of Mathematics of Universitas Pelita Harapan is a place to improve your knowledge and to develop your skills to be an individual who are ready to work in the industry. Not just good facilities, Department of Mathematics of Universitas Pelita Harapan is also supported by experienced lecturers that are very open to questions and inputs from their students. The two-way process of teaching is designed to encourage students to discuss problems with their lecturers. In the department of mathematics, UPH offer the actuarial science concentration which is rarely offered by universities in Indonesia especially for private universities.

Four years of studying in UPH seems to be short because of the teaching and learning process which is very fun. The teaching process is not rigid, where we don’t only listen to lecturers, but also we can actively ask whenever we need. We can even ask some of the lecturers outside the class schedule which really help me to understand all the materials I was learning. We might didn’t have that many students at that time, but we know each other well, not only my classmates but also my seniors and juniors, just like one big family. And the important thing is department of Mathematics in UPH has actuarial science as a concentration. This actuarial science is needed in industry whereas there is only a few of universities that has this as their concentration especially among the private universities in Indonesia. Thanks to department of Mathematics of UPH, I can have a chance to work easily
