Mathies Caring Community is an event organized by Internal Relations Division of Himpunan Mahasiswa Matematika Universitas Pelita Harapan (HMM-UPH). This event aims to build a more intimate and bilateral relationship between lecturers and students in Department of Mathematics UPH, also to inspire students in that may currently face some hardships in their study.
A survey was held to know the problems that mathematics students were facing. The committee then discovered that many of them had not found their passions in mathematics and did not know what they would do upon graduation. From there we decided that the main theme to discuss was “Is Math in Your Path?”. We would be discussing the difficulties studying in Mathematics Majors and how to face them. Moreover, we would also discuss career prospects that a mathematics graduate could engage in.
The event was held on Tuesday, 13 March 2018 at 10.30 AM-1.00 PM at Building D502, UPH. It was attended by 86 students from batch 2014 to batch 2017 and six lecturers. The event was hosted by Nicholas Satyahadi and Josephine Teresa. It began with an opening prayer by Noviana Tjia and speeches by Mr. Kie Van Ivanky Saputra, Ph.D. as the Head of Mathematics Program, Regina Clara Widjaya as the President of HMM-UPH, and Kevin Eleazar Alam as the Head of Organizing Committee, followed with an ice breaking game before proceding to the main event. The main event was a talk show moderated by Grady Mathias Oktavian, Winner of Ambassadors of UPH 2017. Two guest speakers invited specially to share their experiences were Mr. Kie Van Ivanky Saputra and Mr. Ryan Natagawa, S.E., S.SI., a Corporate Credit Analyst at Bank Central Asia who is also an alumni of the Department of Mathematics UPH. After the talk show, the audiences played another games. It then continued with group sharing with lecturers from our department. The topic for the sharing varied for each batch, “Thesis and Internship” for batch 2015, “How to Choose Major in Mathematics” for batch 2016, and “Balancing Student Organization and Studies in University” for batch 2017. The event was closed with a closing prayer and lunch distribution.
We hope by attending Caring Community, students can get to know and build a relationship with lecturers from Department of Mathematics better. We also hope that students who previously had dilemmas regarding their passions in mathematics can now overcome them and even find what they want to be upon graduation.
